Otari School - Te Kura o Otari

Original Strand

The Original Strand continues the tradition of Wilton School, which started in 1956. The school's name was changed to Ōtari in 1999.

In the Original Strand, the national curriculum is taught using educational methods similar to those in most primary schools in New Zealand. It caters for Years 0-8 and delivers the New Zealand curriculum within three multi level classrooms. They are:

  • Kākano: Years 1 and 2
  • Kākāriki: Years 2 and 3
  • Kererū: Years 4 and 5
  • Tōtara: Years 6, 7 and 8

From 1992 (when the Maori Immersion and Montessori Strands were included in the school) the Original Strand has attracted children of local families as well as families from other areas who like the strand’s approach to teaching and learning and the wider school's unique structure.

The Original Strand values the multi level, family environment. Teachers are committed to delivering a quality education, with an emphasis on developing the whole child. The Original Strand Values are:
  • Caring
  • Sustainability
  • Self Knowledge

Parents of Original Strand students often live closer to the school. They are involved in fundraising and are active in classroom support. They are also involved in gardening and take a keen interest in the school environment.
